This entry is part 27 of 37 in the series 2

“Something there is that doesn’t love a wall” begins the poem ‘Mending Wall” of Robert Frost, the American Poet. It is a famous poem: famous for provocation of thoughts.

Rishvan’s poem provokes some thoughts. A poem should be provocative. If not, it is dull poetry encroaching the valuable but meager space in Thinnai.

Our concept of living with our neighbours is different from the western concept where they erect clear fences because they believe Good Fences make Good Neighbours.

We don’t believe it. So, we go all out to cultivate intimacy with our next door neighbour. Or at least we begin with that optimism of being intimate only to burn our fingers later and to feel sorry for our misadventure..

Optimism is the tragedy with us in social relationship of living together. We don’t want to give spaces to neighbours. If our neighbour desires space and attempts to cultivate one, we become suspicious of him. We even attempt to tarnish his reputation in the neighbourhood. We don’t understand neighbor is different from neighbourhood. The former is an individual; the latter is a team. Individuals finally make up a team, no doubt; but remain individuals forever. In other words, the individuality doesn’t get lost in group. One can feel lonely in a crowd of thousands, cant one?

Here, in this poem, it is wrong for the poet rishvan to hope for relationship of togetherness. Good neighborliness does not mean he should come to your house and u should go there. It does not mean your child and his should always play together with his amicably. It does not mean your wife’s pestering the neighbor for various trivia and, if denied, calling them names; or straining the relationship. It does not mean that you should be so uncivil enough to let the drainage overflow. It does not mean the tree you planted together should remain a symbol of your closeness forever.

All wrong. A bad way of living rishavan. No wonder, the relationship will be strained leaving you asking sorrowfully: Why so? Is theren’t a way out to bridge the gap?

The right way is to give space. Be civilized. To be civilized is to live as individuals first allowing your neighbour to live so for themselves.

Good Fences make good neighbors. Fences are important. Your poem negates this universal truth.

    “Sun Rises in the East” இது போன்ற உண்மைகளைத்தான் “Universal Truths” என்று சொல்ல முடியும்.

    “Cultural practices at one place r despicable in another place” –
